Paul and Chuck aboard Redwing

Paul and Chuck aboard Redwing

Paul Tingey (left) was happy to show off his recently finished Redwing in Auckland this February. The quality was beautiful, the ergonomics just as expected, the shape as close to perfect as anyone short of a reincarnated Nat Herreshoff could devise. And (whew) the two keelbolts that hold the keel on didn’t leak a drop. I think everyone who owns a motoryacht should have one of these on his boat deck. And everyone who doesn’t own a motoryacht though these will use a fixed, not removable, keel.

A SLOW BIRTH, BUT SHE’S COMING…

Chuck’s Upcoming Book

Chuck Paine has had a long and fascinating career.  He thought you might want to know more about it and the wonderful series of yachts his studio designed.  So he’s writing his memoirs which will be released in early 2010.

Here’s her deck plan.  The hard dodger has a forward facing nav table and room enough for the watchstander to stretch out and rest while the autopilot does the steering.

NEW LYMAN-MORSE 54

All Cabot Lyman needed to do was sail NEW MORNING a couple of times before he knew that this was a world class sailing machine.  We at Paine Yacht Design knew that, of course, and by working together with Cabot and J.B., we have tweaked her into a mid-fifties offshore cruiser with immense appeal to knowledgeable sailors.  Together we are developing an interior that will serve four to six crew in open ocean conditions.  The Lyman Morse 54 is destined to become the ultimate aft cockpit sailing yacht of the decade.  She’s fast, she’s stiff, and her fixed dodger provides a sheltered place from which to pilot her and watch the waters of the world slip rapidly astern.

PAINE 26

You may have heard, Chuck Paine is retiring.  So what’s he going to do with all that time?  After he and Debby have gotten some traveling out of their systems, Chuck is going to become a BOATBUILDER!  He thinks his final design, the PAINE 26, is the best thing that will ever happen to sailing.  It’s beautiful, it’s fast, and it has a unique feature that makes it possible for a person overboard to get back aboard without assistance.  And it’s small enough to actually get used a lot, not left to rot in a marina like so many larger yachts.  What do you think?
